The Death of Shadowfire
Not long after his ascension into the role of the Subordinate Council in Kirigakure no Sato, at the behest of Godiame Mizukage Ranketsu, A war had broken out between Kumogakure, and Kirigakure. The acting Raikage, Zenaku, had initiated the war. The first casualty occurred as a result of a Bijuu blast from the Gobi Jinchuriki at the time, Sandaime Mizukage Rakudo. The death, was Shima Umioso. Shadow had taken a sour turn at the death of his friend. The initial attack had caused a lot of damage to Kirigakure. Shadow had been in the first defense unit. Due to his being on the battlefield, the Bijuu blast had caused him exponential damage, consisting of broken ribs, massive burns, and a number of abrasions. Because of this, Shadow was weakened. The healers did the best they could do, but chakra induced damage is harder to heal. And so Shadowfire was lacking in the strength for his next encounter.
Zenaku sent a request into the village by one of his Shinobi. This call to action was brought straight to Shadowfire, and due to this, Shadow dashed out to confront the oncoming threat, knowing it would not end well for him. He was not strong enough to combat Zenaku and he well knew it. The worst, he thought, was to be killed, and buy time for his fellow Shinobi to be ready to battle. So Shadow met the threat with everything he had.
It began on the fields outside Kirigakure. The wetlands, as it was affectionately dubbed. Here, Shadowfire unleashed all the power he had left, and Zenaku retaliated in kind, resulting in the loss of Shadowfire. It ended with a kick that hit Shadow into unconsciousness. From there, he was taken from the fields, and brought to some obscure headquarters, locked into a room. In this room, he was bound, and his chakra completely suppressed. In essence? He was helpless. The first night Shadow awoke, the Raikage visited him, bringing along his most famous torture artist, Bocchiere.
So Shadow's torture began, and resulted in massive pain and damage to Shadow's body. It continued for about a week, where Bocchiere tried numerous methods of physical torture to break Shadowfire, and thus get the council member to spill all his knowledge of the inner-workings of the village. Shadow did not break. So Bocchiere finally reached the point of inducing a Tsukuyomi upon Shadowfire. The Tsukuyomi was intent upon breaking Shadow's mind, though it would never come to completion. Not a full minute after the attack began, Bocchiere unleashed the powers of his rinnegan, and ripped SHadow's soul from his body. At the completion of this, Shadow's body disintegrated, as his immortal soul looked upon Bocchiere with a mixture of emotions.Bocchiere figured out the only way to kill this Guardian, and due to this, Shadow's death was sealed. Shadow gazed at Bocchiere for a moment, then vanished into the nether realm. The last thought through his mind as he died? He thought of the village, and how he had let them down. But more than that, he also thought of his forgiveness. The forgiveness for his death.

Spectral Shadowfire
Waking up, he looked around to find himself in a warm, comfortable bed. The blankets were pulled up to his chin, and the heat from the sun suffused the room, and cast a gentle rosy glow about. It was the first time Shadow had seen the sun in Kirigakure no Sato. It figures it would be on the day of his death. However, without realizing it, he rose from the bed, and made his way to the mirror to examine himself for the day. The surprise was the first emotion registered. He could not see his reflection. Casting out his hand, he saw the flickering visage of his soul. He was a ghost, nothing more. Shadow dropped to his knees, and without thinking, sank through the floor and into the ground. He remained thus for three days and three nights, before he finally came to terms with his death. At that point, he rose once more, and began wandering about the village.
Shadow had never been one to act childish, when he could help it. However, as the time grew, he increasingly began to pull stupid stunts, and play games with the land of the living, and the people who dwell within. It passed the time, and eased his loneliness... to a point, that is.AT one point, Shadow began to get agitated, and realized that if he remained forever in this world, than he would be unable to find peace. This was confirmed the day he met the Shinigami's lieutenant. Upon the great dread-lord's orders, Shadow's soul was to be brought to the underworld, and asked to move on. Shadow could not allow this however. For some reason, he found that he could just not find the prospect of moving on appealing. It was as if something else had to be done, and so Shadow engaged the being in combat, and prevailed. This was not without cost. As the lieutenant fled, he cursed Shadow by stealing the protection all specter's receive against the poisonous darkness which led to a realm nobody cared to go. At the loss of this, Shadow had begun to feel its effects almost immediately.
Shadow resisted the power of this darkness, and where it came from, and for a while he succeeded. His efforts were greatly assisted when he finally met the gypsy village. He had been wandering for a while, and came into contact with this village. They assisted him by easing his troubles with their protection spells. But even their power was not enough, and their companionship was hollow. Shadow would find himself lonely, and longing for home, once more. And thus, he returned to Kirigakure to cast about. This was the first time he realized Shima could see him. She approached him, and they engaged in conversation. It was the first time Shadow had felt truly whole again, and wanted. it would not last, however.
The darkness's power continued to grow, and soon, Shadow had begun to succumb to its power. He was still fighting, but his energy was fading, and his will to survive with it. Over the course of this time, Shadow had experimented with his poltergeist abilities. He, thus, discovered his ability to view auras. People's auras assaulted his senses, and after a little time to assimilate this power, he found its uses to be nearly endless. Among them, he could determine a person's moods, power spikes, and even if they were lying. he found amusement in this power.
Soon, so soon, the darkness would overtake Shadow, and begin to drag him to some realm where the depths of which he would never escape. Shadow had gained a touch of madness from this experience, and he had begun to loose himself, and his way. That was, until he was saved, and reborn.
